Hillsong youth collective, Hillsong Young & Free recently released a brand new song “Best Friends” with an accompanying live performance video and studio version.
The song seeks to query what has been peddled as truth by pop culture and society and summits that there is another way that is higher.
“I think it’s important to note with this song (‘Best Friends’) that we are trying to achieve something different here,” says Hillsong Young & Free’s Aodhan King. “It may not sound like a song for Church, but we believe it’s an anthem for young people who know there’s something missing. Kids who know there’s a level of dysfunction to the culture they’ve been sold and are ready for ‘another way.’”
“Our prayer is that this song propels them on the journey of discovering that the thing they are missing is Jesus,” King adds. “We wrote it with intentionality towards that end…a seed sown into places that our songs have never been before.”
LYRICS – Best Friends
VERSE 1:
I don’t want to be on my phone but I can’t be alone
Welcome to the modern way
Trying to be somebody I’m not but it’s not what I want
Tell me there’s another way
PRE-CHORUS:
All of the lights
I chased are now faded
All the cheap thrills
Were only time wasted
Tell me why society’s plan should define who I am
Surely there’s a higher way
CHORUS:
All of my best friends
Are sick of pretending
We want the truth
So much is missing
So give us the real thing
I know it’s You
VERSE 2:
I don’t want a stereotype
To decide who I am
It never knew me anyway
I’m over trying to find the next hype
Cos the high never lasts
I’m going to go another way
PRE-CHORUS 2:
All of the lights
I chased are now faded
Dylan was right
The times they are changing
Tell me why society’s plan should define who I am
Surely there’s a higher way
