Happy Birthday Sinach — The Woman Whose Song Is Sung on Every Continent Turns 54 Today

Today — Monday, March 30, 2026 — is a special day in the global gospel music calendar. Sinach, one of the most celebrated and globally impactful gospel artists in history, turns 54 years old.

Born Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu on March 30, 1972, in Ebonyi State, Eastern Nigeria, the woman the world knows simply as Sinach has spent more than three decades writing songs, leading worship, and — almost accidentally — changing the sound of global Christianity.

The Woman Behind “Way Maker”

If you attend a Christian church anywhere on earth — in Lagos or London, Seoul or São Paulo, Lagos or Los Angeles — there is a very good chance you have sung a song written by Sinach. Most likely, you have sung Way Maker.

Released in 2015, Way Maker became arguably the most covered gospel song of the last decade. It has been recorded by over 60 Christian artists, translated into more than 50 languages, and sung in churches across every continent. Artists including Michael W. Smith, Darlene Zschech, Leeland, Bethel Music, Mandisa, and CeCe Winans have recorded their own versions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a global anthem of hope — live streams of Way Maker performances accumulated hundreds of millions of views as isolated believers found comfort in its simple, powerful declaration of God’s faithfulness.

The song won the Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards — making Sinach the first Nigerian artist to win that honour. She also became the first African artist to top the Billboard Christian Songwriters chart, holding the No. 1 position for 12 consecutive weeks.

A Life Shaped by Worship

Sinach graduated from the University of Port Harcourt and has been a worship leader at Christ Embassy under Pastor Chris Oyakhilome since the early 1990s — over 30 years of faithful, consistent ministry in one church community. She has written over 200 songs and released 16 albums across her career. In 2021, she was formally recognised by the US Congress during a US tour — a remarkable acknowledgement of her global cultural impact.

This year, Sinach celebrated her birthday with the momentum of a remarkable 2026 behind her. In January, she released her 16th album — “Enough For Me” — an 11-track live worship project through GosGem Records that has been warmly received globally. In March, she performed at the Belize City Holy Week Revival Concert, continuing her extraordinary international ministry reach.

What Makes Sinach Different

In a music industry — including Christian music — often driven by image, brand, and platform, Sinach is unusual. She is, at her core, a worshipper. Those who have seen her perform consistently describe the same experience: a woman so genuinely lost in the presence of God that the worship in the room becomes something more than a performance.

Her songs have a particular quality — they are not complicated, they are not clever, and they are not trying to be. Way Maker could have been written at any point in the last thousand years. It carries the weight of the ancient church even as it sounds completely contemporary. That combination — the ancient and the new, the global and the deeply personal — is perhaps why it has crossed every cultural and linguistic barrier with such ease.

From Ebonyi State to Every Continent

The story of a girl born in rural Eastern Nigeria becoming the woman whose song is sung by over 60 artists in 50 languages, from Andean churches to Korean megachurches to living rooms in pandemic lockdown, is one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of contemporary Christian music. It is also, in the deepest sense, a Way Maker story — a testimony to a God who makes ways where there seem to be none.

Happy birthday, Sinach. From the Gospelbuzz family — and from the global church that sings your songs. 🎂🙏
