Popular Nigerian gospel artist and Rox Nation artist, Okey Sokay has set out to launch a series of Instagram live sessions which he has tagged “WHY SING OTHER ARTISTES’ SONGS?” which is set to take place between the 14th and 18th of April, and hosted by Okeysokay on his Instagram live. The discussion, which will be featuring a line-up of other gospel music artists such as Tim Godfrey, Gaise, Lara George, Toeyoursea and Mike Abdul among others.
The discussion series is aimed at breaking down the act of Gospel artists performing the songs of other colleagues without proper credit and acknowledgments. It is indeed an important topic worthy of discussion as this is a table that a large number of Gospel artists especially in Nigeria are sitting at.
For a while now, this topic has been one of the major concerns to a lot of artistes. While some have come out to express their unhappiness about it, others are indecisive what stand to take. But the truth is that certain knowledge is missing on this topic, especially in the “Christian music community”. Most artistes who have expressed their unhappiness about this trend have done so due to the fact that their fellow artiste, when invited for “paid” Ministrations on some platforms, sing popular/trending songs from other artistes without giving due credit to the “owner” of such songs.
A good example took place at THE EXPERIENCE of 2019. Asu Ekiye called out an artiste that has been in ministry for over 20 years for singing mostly other People’s song at THE EXPERIENCE (As seen on Asu’ IG)
And most recently, Sammy Okposo also called out an artiste in South Africa for not just performing his song but also recording it.
These 2 scenarios have gotten a whole lot of musicians thinking and it has stirred up arguments of all sorts but no one is bold to come out publicly to discuss or shed more light accordingly. This is why I thought to have the session to discuss on this topic and other related topics.
So, the idea for the live chat is to guide on proper documentation, the place of music as a tool for worship and also the place of music business. It is also intended give them an opportunity to hear the opinions of some of the big ones in the industry, and finally balance it out scripturally.
It promises to be sensational as a lot of comments are going to be made and there will be important points raised in the discussions. stay tuned to Okey sokay’s Instagram page.
