When this song “Jesus or Whiskey” came across my desk, I was taken aback by the title. How dare you put Jesus and Whiskey in one sentence. what were you thinking…? then I read the story behind the song title and then listened to the song.
Brethren, this song was one repeat for me, the whole time I was working on this post. I could totally relate to the inspiration behind the song. Here is from Troy himself.
“Jesus or Whiskey was born while I was on tour a few years back in Ireland. I fell in love with the village pubs, which were more community gathering holes than the bars we know in America. “As a rule there, anyone can walk behind the bar and fill their glass with a pint of beer. As long as you know how to pour a pint of Guinness…as I found out. One night Father Fitzpatrick was behind the bar serving the patrons when I pulled up & he asked….What can I do you for son? Jesus or whiskey? And so the song began.” – Troy Anderson
Now for a conservative, African Christian, this is hard to talk about, but the soft rock rhythm and the sincere lyrics get to me. Especially the line that says “Give one part Forgiveness, two part Truth…”. This is a different type of Christian music.
